Our client is a UK stock-market-listed (AIM), medium-sized, entrepreneurial company that is leading the global wave in maritime domain awareness technologies, products and systems. They specialise in the development, manufacture and supply of advanced maritime management and surveillance technologies, products and systems. Their products are used around the world to track, monitor and manage large numbers of boats operating along extended coast lines and Exclusive Economic Zones.
They are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Technical Author to produce high quality, customer-facing documentation such as technical manuals and online help.
As the Technical Author, you will be a part of the Customer Support Team, reporting to the Customer Support Manager, and working closely with teams across the business.Responsibilities Working with the software and hardware development teams as well as product development teams to create product documentation including user manuals, online (web-based) help, application notes, and datasheets. Working closely with the software development team to provide user interface (UI) guidance, helping to define terminology and ensure that usability issues are addressed before software development begins. Responsibility for the technical writing discipline within the business, which includes working with our translation agency to manage the translations of some of our product manuals. Working with the sales and marketing team to write and produce technical sales proposals, as well as complete grant and funding applications and RFT response documents. Skills and experience required Extensive experience (5+ years) of writing technical documentation in IT/electronics with the ability to quickly understand, and write about, technical products and systems. Experience of writing technical sales proposals and responses to RFTs is desirable but not essential. Ability to write clear, concise, accurate, and engaging text, with experience of writing for audiences whose first language is not English. Ability to edit and format documents to ensure consistency and readability as well as adherence to company guidelines and standards. Excellent attention to detail is essential. A strong interest in usability to ensure both the documentation and software are user-friendly is highly desirable. Some experience in usability testing is desirable but not essential. Experience of working in an agile software management environment is desirable but not essential. However, applicants must be able to work to tight deadlines, when required. Experience of working with a translation agency to manage the translation of user manuals into multiple languages is desirable. Experience in producing high-quality diagrams and illustrations is desirable but not essential. High level of proficiency using industry standard tools particularly Adobe FrameMaker and WebWorks ePublisher as well as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Visio. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign is desirable but not essential.
